11 Non-Toxic Body Wash Picks To Indulge In the Shower
This non-toxic body wash blog post comes at a perfect time. I was just talking to someone the other day about how I believe youβre either a bar soap gal or a body wash gal. Truthfully, I lean more towards the bar soap life because I just think itβs easier to rub a bar of soap across your body, rather than squeeze body wash into your hands a million times, make sure it doesnβt drip out of your hands, and rub it on your bod.
However, considering I work as a freelance beauty writer full time, I am kind of required to test many of the products I get sent in the mail from different brands every day. And that includes body washes! Iβve tried many on the market, and prefer to reach for non-toxic body wash because 1.) itβs better for my skin, 2.) most likely better for the planet, and 3.) I have really sensitive skin and using body washes with harsh chemicals and ingredients in them will most likely flare up my eczema and other skin issues.
I also think itβs probably a good idea to opt for non-toxic body washes because a body wash (along with body lotion) are one of the few products you most likely slather onto your entire body almost every day. Imagine slathering on toxic chemicals onto your body every dayβyikes!
A great non-toxic body wash usually avoids synthetic fragrances, toxic chemicals, and endocrine disrupters. When on the hunt for a safe body wash, you can look for phrases like βeco-friendly,β βplant-based,β βorganic body wash,β and βnatural body wash.β Usually, those personal care products wonβt contain harmful chemicals and have a pretty clean ingredient list.
But if you don’t want to scrutinize a product label, check out a dozen of our best picks as far as non-toxic body washes go.
11 Non-Toxic Body Wash Picks To Indulge In the Shower
Best Overall Non-Toxic Body Wash
The Honest Company 2-in-1 Cleansing Shampoo + Body Wash
Available at Amazon ($12) | Grove ($12)
Jessica Albaβs The Honest Company seems to really nail it when it comes to non-toxic body care for adults and babies. I wrote a review on the best non-toxic body lotions on the market, and The Honest Company Hydrating Face + Body Lotion was one of my top picks.
The 2-in-1 Cleansing Shampoo + Body Wash is another winner in my book. I ordered the Lavender scent and enjoyed using it at nighttime before bed. Itβs definitely pretty heavily fragranced (unlike the California Naturals option I mentioned above), so thatβs something to consider when choosing the best non-toxic body wash for you from this list. The good thing is that I didnβt notice any irritation from this product, so thatβs a big plus.
The pump dispenser is really convenient for everyday use, and I thought this pick lathered really well and felt nice on the skin. It was just the right amount of sudsy without being too much. This product has an insane amount of reviews on Amazon and is a fan-favorite for sure. It comes in three scents including Lavender, Citrus Vanilla, and Sweet Almond, and also comes in a Fragrance-Free version as well. I didnβt test this out on my hair because I typically never use a 2-in-1 body wash on my hair, but if youβre low-maintenance (unlike me haha), you might enjoy using this on your hair, too.
Best Runner-Up Non-Toxic Body Wash
California Naturals Moisture Body Wash
Available at Amazon ($9)
This was my favorite non-toxic body wash from all the ones I tested for a bunch of reasons. First of all, itβs very affordable at $9 a bottle. Second of all, they werenβt kidding when they said that this body wash is ideal for dry and/or sensitive skin. Even after the first use, I noticed a difference in my skin post-wash. This body wash is moisturizing without leaving a weird film on your skin after youβve rinsed it off.
It has a very light scent of sweet grass, fig, and melon, and I kinda love that the formula has a green tint. Iβve never seen that in another body wash before and for whatever reason, it makes it feel a bit more au naturale, if you will.
Iβm also obsessed with the packaging and love the way this looks in my shower. The cap on the top is black with white speckles, which you donβt see very often either. I just think this product is so unique in its formula and packaging, and it makes me want to try other California Naturals products in the future.
One thing I will note is that if you like a body wash with a very noticeable scent, this one is not for you. The scent is super light and faintβsomething I prefer because I have such sensitive skin and heavily-fragranced products can wreak havoc on my skin.
All-in-all, I totally love this body wash and highly recommend it as a perfect non-toxic body wash pick!
Best Non-Toxic Body Wash for Sensitive Skin

Vanicream Gentle Body Wash
Available at Amazon ($12)
Vanicream does no wrong in my book (see my Vanicream review for proof). This non-toxic body wash has a β1β rating for being clean and toxin-free by EWG Skin Deepβs standards. Itβs great for any skin type, but even better for folks with sensitive skin. It doesnβt contain any ingredients that might irritate sensitive skin (including fragrance) and feels gentle on your body.
This body wash suds up nicely and gets the job done without any nasty ingredients. If you suffer from any type of skin concern on your body, such as psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, etc, this would be a great option for you.
Best Fragrance-Free Non-Toxic Body Wash

JASON Sensitive Skin Fragrance Free Body Wash
Available at Amazon ($13)
This is another great option for those with super sensitive skin. This fragrance-free, non-toxic body wash is the right amount of creamy and sudsy, and doesnβt irritate my skin at all. It washes off easily and leaves my skin just the right amount of moisturized.
Best Luxury Non-Toxic Body Wash

OSEA Undaria Algae Body Wash
Available at OSEA Malibu ($32)
If youβre willing to spend a little extra on a lovely non-toxic body wash, consider adding the OSEA Undaria Algae Body Wash to your daily routine. This is a beautiful, clean formula that contains ingredients like seaweed, glycerin, and oils to hydrate your body while thoroughly cleansing, too.
This body wash doesnβt lather or foam up a ton, but I find that can be dispersed across my body pretty easily and it rinses off easily, too. My skin feels clean and moisturized after each use, and I donβt feel like I need to run to my body lotion to add hydration back into my skin post-shower.
One of the best parts about this body wash is the smell. Featuring notes of grapefruit, lime, and cypress with mango and mandarin, this pick smells like what you would expect in a spa.
Most Hydrating Non-Toxic Body Wash

Native Moisturizing Body Wash
Available at Amazon ($13)
There are two types of body washes you can purchase from Nativeβthereβs the regular body wash and the moisturizing body wash. I tested the Moisturizing Body Wash in both Lily Milk & White Sage and Night Jasmine & Walnut. Both of these smelled lovely and didnβt have too strong of a fragrance.
I wasnβt expecting the body wash to be as thick as it is. It definitely feels more like a lotion than a body wash, and it could take some getting used to when applying it in the shower. I think this formula is perfect if you have really dry skin and need to cleanse your body without stripping your skin of its natural oils. Itβs also ideal for winter months when your skin is drier than normal and you need that extra moisture.
If you have really oily skin or prefer body washes that feel light and foam a lot, this pick is not for you. This formula doesnβt really lather, so be prepared for that. Itβs a great option to use as a shaving cream as well!
Best All-Purpose Non-Toxic Body Wash

Dr. Bronner’s Pure-Castile Magic Liquid Soap
Available at Amazon ($10 for 8 fl. oz.)
I was really impressed with how much this lathered on my skin. For a soap thatβs touted as super all-natural, I wasnβt expecting this to foam up as much as it does. I donβt know what is in this that makes it so sudsy but Iβm impressed. One thing Iβve realized since testing this product out is that they say to βdiluteβ it because itβs so concentrated. Maybe thatβs why it is so sudsyβmaybe I was using too much?
My skin felt pretty great after using this, but there was one thing I really didnβt like about it. The fragrance was way too pepperminty for my liking, and I donβt really want to be walking around town reeking of peppermint lol! That being said, I think the peppermint might be nice as a hand soap, but it wouldnβt be my first choice for a body wash. However, there are a ton of other fragrances you can choose from if you donβt want to smell like peppermint. I wish I had ordered a different scent but Iβm glad I got to try out the formula to see how well it cleanses the skin without drying it out.
Best Lightly-Scented Non-Toxic Body Wash

ATTITUDE Body Wash
Available at Amazon ($13)
The brand was kind enough to send me these body washes to test out for this blog post. They sent me the ATTITUDE Super Leaves Body Wash in White Tea Leaves and Lemon Leaves, as well as the ATTITUDE Body Wash for Sensitive Skin. I thought the two scented body washes they sent to me were really nice and not overpowering. In fact, they were definitely on the lighter side in terms of scent compared to other picks on this list. I also appreciated the fragrance-free version, especially for my sensitive skin.
I thought these lathered up really nicely and washed off easily as well. They werenβt super super foamy, but they werenβt completely non-foaming, either. I also wouldnβt say that they left my skin feeling super hydrated, but also didnβt leave it feeling dry either. I think these non-toxic body washes would be a great option for anyone who errs on the side of oily skin.
Non-Toxic Body Wash Options I Wasnβt Wow-ed About

Avalon Organics Bath & Shower Gel
Available at Amazon ($15)
I ordered the Nourishing Lavender scent and I felt like it was too strong. The texture of this product is pretty watery and itβs a little bit hard to disperse across your body. It doesnβt really foam that well either, which is annoying.
You can tell that itβs very heavily fragranced with essential oils, which always makes me nervous because my skin is pretty sensitive to heavy use of essential oils (and all heavy fragrance, really).
I had a bad experience with an Avalon Organics Non-Toxic Body Lotion that I tested for another blog post, so Iβm a bit wary of this brand tbh! I think that the body wash is usable, but it certainly wasnβt my favorite from the products that I tested.

Aleavia Body Cleanse
Available at Amazon ($25)
I had high hopes for this one, especially because it has such great reviews on Amazon. I didnβt really like this formula at all. It doesnβt lather at all and is hard to spread across your body. You can tell that itβs definitely βcleanβ and is super safe to use on the skin, but that doesnβt mean it works as a good body wash lol! I ordered the βOrchidβ scent, which smelled subtle but nice. But I think if you prefer a lightly-scented body wash, this might be a good option for you.Β
I personally donβt think the product justifies the price and I wouldnβt purchase it again. I hate that it doesnβt really lather all that much, if at all.

Vitasana Body Wash
Available at Amazon ($19)
This is another pick that was a let-down. I ordered the Sea Buckthorn/Bergamot scent and I didnβt like it. I felt like it smelled too masculine and it didnβt really appeal to me. Maybe I would have liked it more if I had chosen one of the other scents available. The body wash didnβt foam a ton which made application a bit difficult. My skin felt nice afterward, but I probably wouldnβt spend $19 on it again.
